The best way to learn new techniques is under the pressure of a real job with real deadlines. However sometimes we get the luxury of learning new techniques in between projects using this time to prepare for future projects taking advantage of newly available techniques and work-flow. Whether its a new renderer or a whole new package or even a new workflow we get to grips with current opportunities in the digital art world, making the techniques 'ours' with our main focus on making the next client project the best yet.
Space: We made a full-size model of the earth with a satellite (there are 60 or so of this type as we understand) and tracking camera orbiting over the poles. First of all it was a surprise to find that our software could handle the earth full-size measured in millimeters with a mean radius if I'm not mistaken of around 6371,000,000 mm. It was a nice surprise that our camera in the scene was able to find a 4 meter satellite.
Robots: Designing, rigging and animating of robots in combination with biped animation in tongue-in-cheek space settings was a lot of fun.
Fish: The original plan was to make some glass object break and water spill out but in the end we got onto fish more fish. A little bit of volume light, caustics, refraction and simulated water added to the result.
